Human beings are pack animals.
We need each other to survive.
Our bodies are engineered for chemical
and biological dependency on another human
being for survival, for sustenance.
Our bodies create chemical attraction
and dependence to one another – For example,
when a new mother breastfeeds, a powerful
hormone called oxytocin is released.
It’s commonly called the “cuddle chemical,”
and it’s responsible for that incredible feeling
of bondedness to others.
It’s the very same chemical that we emit
when we fall deeply in love.
In the most abstract, anthropological sense:
Love is a chemical addiction.
Love is a physiological, evolutionary drive
to propagate our species for survival.
Love is innate, ingrained, hardwired in us.
So why do we fight it?
If you find yourself at the mercy of it,
distracted, unfocused, scrambled – if it drives you,
but does not direct you in the appropriate avenues,
know one thing: You cannot fight it. So re-direct it.
Love can be channeled across avenues other
than romantic love.
Love others.
Love yourself.
Love yourself.
Love yourself.
Love is a chemical addiction.
If you find yourself chasing after that feeling,
over and over again, perhaps sometimes
abandoning a relationship in search for the thrill
of “passion,” just admit it. You’re an addict.
So what approach do you take?
Self-control, self-awareness, finding out
what is the root of your drug/love-seeking behavior,
and addressing that unsatiated need.
Fill it with healthier avenues.
Do things that you enjoy, that help you to build
that self-esteem and stability, and learn
to love yourself as a priority.
