You are irreversibly molded
by the first time you fall in love.
Every experience you have shapes you,
I know this–all knowledge is internalized
and digested–to some extent.
But falling in love takes hold of you,
carves you, chips away at you in ways
that I think other experiences do not.
Falling in love has of way of unearthing parts
of you that have always been there,
while also managing to fundamentally
change you.
Falling in love catalyses a chemical reaction
that yields an undeniable modification
in your soul’s structure.
Falling out of love, I assume,
will bring about it’s own set of challenges
and changes. Falling out of love, I assume,
will cause my skin to thicken and my eyes
to view the world through jaded lenses.
At present, I can only postulate
and form such assumptions around
what this change may be, for I have yet
to fall out of love with you.
I’m still heart broken, still exposed, raw,
thin-skinned and painfully naive.
