With the advent of the Internet and ever-improving technology,
instant communication has become increasingly streamlined
and efficient. However, the ability to remotely communicate
has had negative repercussions, particularly among teenagers.
Kids take advantage of online platforms in order to bully others,
engaging in what is known as cyberbullying.
This behavior can manifest itself as teasing, sending unwanted
pictures, impersonation, or harassment.
Bullying has always been a problem, but it originally
did not have the complicated aspects of cyberbullying.
For instance, teenagers today have the ability
to remain anonymous while attacking others on the Internet,
which was not possible in the past.
This has led to an entire host of problems,
as anyone anywhere is able to throw insults
at another person without having to deal with firsthand guilt
or consequences.
This problem cannot be solved by simply telling the children not
to access the Internet, because the Internet has become
an integral part in our lives.
There are also many children who face situations
in which they cannot avoid their bullies,
whether it is face-to-face or online. Therefore,
it is important to learn how to deal with bullying.
The first thing to realize is that bullies sometimes
do not even realize they are bothering their victims.
What they may see as a harmless joke can have much more
damaging effects on the other end.
Bullying can even happen between close friends.
This is why it is important that kids stand up
for themselves when they feel uncomfortable because
their bullies may not even realize they are being hurtful.
But in the case that bullies hold intent to harm,
the best first step is to consult a trusted adult.
If discussing with parents would be uncomfortable,
students can always go to school counselors, teachers,
or club sponsors.
Not only would this result in helpful advice,
but it would likely also end in serious consequences
for the bully.
If you are a parent and have even the slightest indication
that your child is being bullied, make an effort to encourage
open conversation, as your child may feel alone and helpless.
Cyberbullying is far too prevalent to put an end to completely;
however, through combined efforts, if each of us were to make
an effort to help our friends and family face cyberbullying,
it would lead to a domino effect, instituting positive change
within the community, whether it be local or even national.
